Retention Basin $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A retention basin, is a type of best management practice (BMP) that is used to manage stormwater runoff to prevent flooding and downstream erosion, and improve water quality in an adjacent river, stream, lake or bay. Sometimes called a wet pond or wet detention basin, it is an artificial lake with vegetation around the perimeter, and includes a permanent pool of water in its design. It is distinguished from a detention basin, sometimes called a dry pond, which temporarily stores water after a storm, but eventually empties out at a controlled rate to a downstream water body. It also differs from an infiltration basin which is designed to direct stormwater to groundwater through permeable soils. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Recruitment and Retention $9.95 Since Hurricane Katrina, resignations from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) have increased, and the department went more than a year without recruiting enough candidates to justify a police academy training course. The authors present practical recommendations for change that could help the NOPD improve recruiting and retention. Issues addressed include the lack of affordable post-Katrina housing, the fact that the families of many police officers no longer live in the New Orleans area, the destroyed departmental infrastructure, and a budget that does not provide enough resources to meet basic needs. They focus on compensation, including housing; the promotion process and the career management system; recruiting; the mix of officers and civilians; and ways to improve the morale of the NOPD. The recommendations, which are specifically tailored to the unique circumstances of the NOPD, include (1) using civilian employees, where appropriate, for jobs currently being performed by uniformed officers; (2) developing a proactive recruiting program; (3) offering some of the city’s housing stock in-kind to police officers or selling the property and using the proceeds to improve compensation; (4) increasing the frequency of promotion examinations; (5) eliminating the backlog of promotions to higher levels in the department; (6) restructuring compensation to attract recruits and retain serving officers; (7) establishing a first-responders charter school; and (8) rebuilding the police infrastructure to improve morale. |

Retention of Title $240 There is a popular myth that buyers do not own goods until the buyer has paid. Legally, this is incorrect. Instead, title passes on delivery, unless a clause has been agreed in a contract between the parties that title passes on payment. This Briefing looks at how to protect your business to ensure that when a customer goes out of business you can recover your goods rather than being left as an unsecured creditor who receives nothing. |

Retention of Volunteers $176.84 This study focused on the Australian health sector, examining the factors that influence the intention of volunteers to leave their employing organizations. There is a general scarcity of research concerning volunteer work, and understanding health sector volunteers is particularly important due to the significance of their contribution in Australia. In exploring volunteer work, this study has utilized a variant of the Mathieu and Zajac (1990) model of organizational commitment. In the health sector much of the work performed by volunteers is very similar to that done by paid employees. In addition, in the Australian health sector volunteers and paid employees often work alongside one another. The study discusses key findings and presents recommendations for relating to effective management of volunteers in the health sector. As a secondary outcome, the study demonstrates the value of judiciously using models and measures normally associated with paid employment in understanding volunteer activity. It is anticipated that these outcomes will inform future research within the volunteer sector. Nursing Student Retention $55 In the current nursing shortage, student retention is a priority concern for nurse educators, health care institutions, and the patients they serve. This book presents an organizing framework for understanding student retention, identifying at-risk students, and developing both diagnostic-prescriptive strategies to facilitate success and innovations in teaching and educational research. The author's conceptual model for student retention, "Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success," is interwoven throughout, along with essential information for developing, implementing, and evaluating retention strategies. An entire chapter is devoted to how to set up a Student Resource Center. Most chapters conclude with "Educator-in-Action" vignettes, which help illustrate practical application of strategies discussed. Nurse educators at all levels will find this an important resource. |

Perceptions of Educators on Grade Retention $114.71 This qualitative study examined the perceptions of educators on the topic of grade retention. From the analysis of the interviews with teachers, guidance counselors and administrators, five themes evolved: reasons for considering retention, rationales for retention, educational/personal perspectives, factors that influence when to retain, and retention versus social promotion. The respondents believed that the primary grades would be the optimal time in a childs schooling for retention. These participants also suggested that allowing social promotion did not teach a student responsibility or accountability for their education. Finally, several participants suggested that society does not view retention in the same way that educators view it: as an opportunity to grow in maturity, build a stronger academic base and/or as a chance to improve academically. Within this study is a suggested model for an alternative to retention. A support team would be established to offer counseling and academic support. It is also suggested that the retained students school day be revised to provide instruction in the retaining grade and the grade to which the student would be promoted. Retention and Selectivity in Liquid Chromatography $270 This book brings together a number of studies which examine the ways in which the retention and selectivity of separations in high-performance liquid chromatography are dependent on the chemical structure of the analytes and the properties of the stationary and mobile phases. Although previous authors have described the optimisation of separations by alteration of the mobile phase, little emphasis has previously been reported of the influence of the structure and properties of the analyte. The initial chapters describe methods based on retention index group increments and log P increments for the prediction of the retention of analytes and the ways in which these factors are influenced by mobile phases and intramolecular interactions. The values of a wide range of group increments in different eluents are tabulated. Different scales of retention indices in liquid chromatography are described for the comparison of separations, the identification of analytes and the comparison of stationary phases. Applications of these methods in the pharmaceutical, toxicology, forensic, metabolism, environmental, food and other fields are reviewed. The effects of different mobile phases on the selectivity of the retention indices are reported. A compilation of sources of reported retention index values are given. Methods for the comparison of stationary phases based on the interactions of different analytes are covered, including lipophilic and polar indices, shape selectivity comparisons, their application to novel stationary phases, and chemometric methods for column comparisons. |

Radionuclide Retention in Geologic Media $92 GEOTRAP is the OECD/NEA Project on Radionuclide Migration in Geologic, Heterogeneous Media carried out in the context of site evaluation and safety assessment of deep repository systems for long-lived radioactive waste. Retention of radionuclides within the geosphere for prolonged periods is an important safety function of deep geologic disposal concepts for radioactive waste. The extent to which retention processes can be relied upon in repository performance assessment depends upon the existence of well-established theoretical bases for the processes. It also depends on support for the operation of specific retention processes, and models for their quantitative evaluation, from a wide range of laboratory and field experiments and observations from nature. The fifth GEOTRAP workshop, "Geological Evidence and Theoretical Bases for Radionuclide-retention Processes in Heterogeneous Media" held in May 2001, looked at radionuclide-retention processes and their consideration and representation in performance assessments. Current approaches to characterising and modelling retention processes, and suggestions for future improvements, were presented and discussed. In addition to the material presented during the workshop, this publication includes a technical synthesis reflecting the discussions that took place as well as the conclusions and recommendations made, notably during the working group sessions. |
